How to obtain your TransUnion Credit Reports — step-by-step guidance from the CanFi team.

There are four main ways to obtain your TransUnion credit reports in Canada:

1. Online

Fastest

2. By Phone

Slower

3. By Mail

Slowest

4. Credit Karma

Instant

Before you begin — please remember:

1. DO NOT PAY MONEY

It is free to obtain your credit reports in Canada. The credit reporting agencies will constantly try to make you believe you have to pay money to receive your credit reports. At any point you are asked to pay please decline and save your money.

2. EXPECT PROBLEMS

If you have never registered with TransUnion before, it may take a couple of attempts. This is normal. Examples of potential problems:

  • You fail your identity authentication questions
  • You already have an account with TransUnion from a long time ago
  • Your credit account is locked due to reports of fraud
  • Your account was part of a security breach in the past
  • The identification entered does not match what TransUnion has on file
  • You do not have a TransUnion credit file

3. WHY BOTHER

In Canada, there are two main credit reporting agencies: Equifax and TransUnion. When you apply for credit, lenders access your information directly from one of these agencies. Because you can't be certain which agency a lender will use, it's important to regularly obtain, review, and verify that both credit reports are accurate and up to date.

4. CANADIAN PRIVACY LAWS

The same laws that protect your identity also prevent companies like CanFi from accessing your credit reports on your behalf. That's why CanFi programs are designed to empower you—the consumer—to take control, self-advocate, and confidently navigate the credit system.
